How to Fix Black Screen of Death in Windows 8 (8.1)

This is a thoughtful issue for the users of Windows 8. Many have reported a strange error without any message prompts or problem definitions. On the word of protesters, Windows 8 bumps into a black screen after it boots, forcing them to restart. This could certainly be an issue of incompatible updates of Windows itself as well as device drivers, corrupted device drivers. The prescribed solution is to be initiated through safe mode, but as Windows 8 does not boot into safe mode in a usual way, you may need its installation disc.

  • Insert Windows 8 installation disc and restart your computer
  • Choose Keyboard & Language options and click Next in the setup box
  • On the next screen, click Repair your computer
  • In Choose an option interface, go for Troubleshoot and then Advanced options
  • In Advanced options, click for Command Prompt and access system drive (For example C:)
  • Type the command line BCDEDIT /SET {DEFAULT} BOOTMENUPOLICY LEGACY and press Enter
  • Type Exit and press Enter to restart your computer
  • Now you will be able to use F8 key for displaying Advanced Boot Options

As the issue titled above is caused due to Windows updates, Driver updates, or Corrupt drivers, given below are the processes to resolve each matter by uninstalling them.

Solving Windows 8 Black Screen Issue

Windows Updates

  • Restart your computer and tap F8 key continuously to view Advanced Boot Options
  • Select Safe mode in these options and log in as an administrator
  • Point the cursor on the upper right corner of your desktop screen to open Charm bar
  • Click on the Settings icon and go for the Control Panel
  • In Control Panel window, click to access Programs and Features
  • Now click the words stating View installed updates, in the left pane of window
  • Right click the recently installed update and choose to Uninstall it

Driver Updates

  • Restart your computer and tap F8 key continuously to view Advanced Boot Options
  • Select Safe mode in these options and log in as an administrator
  • Point the cursor on the upper right corner of your desktop screen to open Charm bar
  • Click on the Settings icon and go for the Control Panel
  • In Control Panel window, click to access Device Manager
  • Locate the drive in the list that you recently updated by expanding the device category
  • Right click the updated driver to drop down its context menu and go for its Properties
  • In the Properties window, access the Driver tab and click Roll Back Driver
  • You drivers will be downgraded to previous version

Corrupt Registry Entries

Since Windows registry is considered central hub and integral part of OS, it must not be overlooked. A registry error or conflicting entry can also cause a black screen error in Windows 8. Therefore, it is recommended to fix Windows 8 registry using reliable free registry cleaner to see if it could eradicate the error. Here is how to do it:

  • Download Install the prescribed registry cleaner
  • Use Scanner to find errors and fix them
  • Press Defrag button to organize your fragmented registry

Violated Drivers

  • Restart your computer and tap F8 key continuously to view Advanced Boot Options
  • Select Safe mode in these options and log in as an administrator
  • Point the cursor on the upper right corner of your desktop screen to open Charm bar
  • Click on the Settings icon and go for the Control Panel
  • In Control Panel window, click to access Device Manager
  • Locate the driver that you think has gone corrupted under a device category
  • Once identified, right click the driver, choose to Uninstall, and click OK to confirm your action
  • Close Device Manager and Restart your computer into the Normal mode

After identifying and handling the problem through Safe mode, you must be able to boot normally, without any trouble. Before download and installing any updates, make sure that these are compatible to your system and hardware.
